Faux painting marble was not an option my client in Boston first considered for her bathroom remodel! In fact, her first choice was to use actual Carrera marble on the walls of this space – until costs and logistical challenges forced her to look for an alternative. The primary obstacle was that the bathroom is on the 3rd floor of her condo – and the only way to get slabs of marble into the space was to open the exterior wall and bring it in with a crane!
With these challenges, we knew faux painting the marble would be much cheaper – but the big question she had was if the look would be convincing?!
As always, my first step is to paint concept boards – using the actual materials and techniques I would use in the final space. Using Benjamin Moore paints for durability and gloss, water-based polyurethane for the sheen, I did scale paintings to show how I could make the walls look like marble – and our client was sold!
With my boards approved, we were on to painting the actual walls. Of course, different samples of marble can all have very different veining – so we asked our client for photos of what she wanted, and used this as our guide for patterning on her walls.
In the end, our client was thrilled with the end look!
Enjoy!!
